dog pepper spray
I want to take walks with my child to get in shape. However I have had a fear of large dogs for most of my life. There is a doberman in our neighborhood that barks and jumps up (you see his head above the fence) when I walk by. I need to get over this fear. What is a person supposed to do if an aggressive dog comes up to my child and me? I was thinking of getting a baseball bat or pepper spray.
of course I wouldn’t use a bat or pepper spray if the dog is on it’s property! I’m talking about if the dog runs up to my child or me on the street.
I find it so funny that most people are concerned with the dog not being hurt but hardly anyone brought up my child’s safety. I am a dog lover, I’ve had many and considered them a part of my family. I am talking about a situation that could become dangerous, we all know those occur sometimes. It’s really scary how overboard people can go sometimes, to the point where they’re not even caring about the humans’ safety!

My son and I have been chased by this dog before. (Its a rottweiler) I have called the police and animal control but they will not do anything. I want to go on walks with my son but am afraid of the dog. What can I take with me to protect us? I was thinking mace but was not sure if that would stop the attack quick enough. I dont want to shoot it because I dont want to get in trouble. Any suggestions??

pepper spray dogs
Hey guys. Some of you may have read my previous post about my dog almost getting attacked by a Siberian Husky in my neighborhood when he (the husky) was running around off leash and my dog was on a leash. My dog is a 6 lb Pomeranian and I am so scared that when I am walking one of the neighborhood dogs will be out running loose and attack him. Since I don’t feel like walking around with a baseball bat, should I just bring pepper spray or something? Would that be effective with a vicious dog? I do not have ANYTHING against pits, rotts, or any other large dog. I just get very nervous when I see them off leash with their owners no where in sight, especially since some of them could be dog aggressive. My dog is very hyper and tries to play with all dogs, regardless of their size. I want to take him for walks but I’m kind of afraid to because he is so fragile!

I have a German shepherd and a shepherd/rottweiler mix. My mixed breed dog is fairly aggressive toward other dogs (we’re working on this). When I take her out for a walk, I occasionally encounter dogs running loose and it’s a problem when they’re determined to come up to her.
If the other dog doesn’t behave aggressively, it’s not a huge problem; but one day we encountered a husky type dog that had aggressive body language: tail up and stiff, hackles raised, direct eye contact and coming at us straight on. My dog went ballistic and I had a big problem on my hands.
I used to carry pepper spray, but I really prefer not to use this if I can avoid it. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Thanks for all the tips. I’m working on the obedience with my dog and I have no qualms about corrections when needed. I just have to learn to handle my own anxiety I’ve developed around walks with her.

Hi, there’s a HUGE black lab mix on my street that has gotten out of the house, bitten kids, and even tried to kill a friends pomeranian. The dog is Deemed "Dangerous", but the laws around here are VERY loosely enforced.
I have a nephew who frequently visits with my sister, and he is 3 years old and likes to play in my yard. Last week, the black lab mix chased him into the house. The owner ran and got him, and said "Sorry, he just doesn’t like kids."
Is there ANY non lethal weapon that I can carry in case he tries to hurt my nephew? I do have a few knives and a .40 cal smith and wesson, but I do NOT want to kill the dog. I just want to be able to escape with my nephew and/or dogs (I take them on walks together).
Would a tazer or pepper spray work, or are those ineffective against a TRULY vicious dog?
Any Ideas? REMEMBER: I don’t want to kill the dog if I don’t have to.
EDIT: I am aware of the "Trolling" Problem on yahoo.
I SWEAR that I’m not a "troll". I’m asking this because I want answers, not because I’m bored and want to piss people off.

My dog was abused when he was little, and he does not like strangers or strange dogs coming up to him. Since my dog is shy, I avoid places like off-leash dog parks, dog beaches, etc, because I respect owners who want to let their dogs run free. However, when I am taking my dog for walks around the neighborhood, or hikes, we are often approached by loose dogs. When owners don’t do anything to stop their dog despite my pleas, what should I do? I don’t want to mace a friendly dog, but then even friendly dogs will try to bite/chase my dog once they sense his fear. And the owners always get mad and say I have a bad dog because he doesn’t like his butt being smelled by strangers! If a dog will stay by his or her owner, I have no problem with it being off-leash, unfortunately that is rarely the case, and the more my dog gets lunged at, the less doggy-social he will be. I want to introduce him to other dogs, but he gets too scared and will either run or snap, and i don’t want anyone to get hurt….

dog pepper spray
So I recently moved into an apartment and my dog gets plenty of exercise I walk him twice a day. He has been with a training collar for a year seemed fine until I lost the damn remote. It’s just one that vibrates. He behaves fine with it on because he knows I will vibrate him if he doesn’t. Then he figured out it doesn’t vibrate anymore when he does stuff like bark at the neighbors through the sliding glass door so he is going crazy. He attacks the window on my car when people drive by and now he attacks the sliding glass door when neighbors walk by. I was out taking him potty and he is really strong now and I can’t hold him back he will pull me with him. I am completely helpless with restraining him now. He goes after the neighbors when they walk by and will attack other dogs he’s very territorial. He doesn’t attack people he runs up to them nips there leg and runs in the house and gets in his bed. I don’t know what to do. I think he just bit the neighbor but I’m not sure I heard him say something. I want to pepper spray my own dog! He’s terrible!!! I want him to protect me but only when I’m the one getting hurt ya know? I don’t want him to be nice to pet but I don’t want him to mess with everyone. Only if they mess with me ya know?? INFO He’s an australian cattle dog. He’s 4. He’s only like 20+ pounds and he’s extremely strong and very protective. Also on walks he tries to go after people and other dogs and will confront other dogs if they are off leash and not controlled by there owners. Apparently my dogs a tiny lil bully.HELP

if another dog were to attack your dog(s) while out for a walk? Or do you or would you take something with you for protection?
I rarely take my two pups on walks in public places where other dogs might approach them. Lately I’ve been thinking it might be a good idea — mainly for socialization purposes and for exercise (for all of us). But honestly, it scares me to do so for two reasons:
1. What if they were attacked? What would/should I do? AND
2. Aren’t they at risk for dog diseases/worms/bordatella, etc. out there where other dogs poop, eand so forth?
Of course they have had their shots, but in this low income state where I live, I KNOW not everyone can afford proper health care for their pets. Furthermore, I have no confidence that these unvaccinated pets would be kept away from other animals — like at a dog park. Is it foolish to risk taking them out like that?

My Rott/Shepard mix is aggressive to strangers and men in ball caps. I have recieved a ticket for him and have to go to court. An officer had to mace him to get onto my porch and he backed off a little, but not much. They say I have to get him out of the "aggressive zone" or put him down. I don’t want to put him down because he is just a BIG BABY. He just don’t like strangers. Please help me he is a good dog but I don’t know how to fix this problem. Thank you Teresa
My male Rott/shepard mix is one year old. He was about 8 weeks when I got him.I have a female (his sister) and a full blooded german shepard (male). They get along together, but my male rott mix has a problem with strangers. He got out a couple of weeks ago and my neighbor called 911 because Mufasa wouldn’t let him out of his house, because his kids tease them and I have asked them to stop but they won’t. My yard is not fenced in and neither is my porch. I was at home when the officer came, but Mufasa wouldn’t let him in the yard so he maced him. I didn’t know they were out of their huge pin. He was teased on a camping trip by a kid in a ball cap we can go up to him with one on but anyone else he acts like he will tear their throat out. This all started reacently so I haven’t let it escalate. I take all three of them for walks all the time. I just don’t know what is going on with Mufasa.

dog deterrent
I want a dog! I am very experienced with dogs and various breeds so I don’t need information on that.
I am followed often and strange men make me feel uncomfortable. If you were a rapist or attacker, who would you choose? Why? Any advice?
The girl walking alone
The girl walking with an 65-90 pound dog
The breed is not important to me because my apartment complex is very strict on breed.
Here’s another interesting question:
If you choose the girl with a dog, would it be more of a deterrent if the dog was black? (a friend of mine said lighter colored dogs looked less aggressive and more approachable)
I am very experienced with dogs, I’m a trainer and my mother is and Animal Control Officer. However, this doesn’t mean that I know that people will stop following me if I get a big dog versus a little one. I have no idea how effective that will be because I have only recently been out on my own and dog-less. Before my mother or my friends would always accompany me on walks with my dogs so I didn’t know.
