dog pepper spray
I am training for a half marathon and I don’t have a choice of where I run, there is only one way out of my neighborhood with sidewalks. So I increased my run by a mile and started to go by this house (I don’t know the owners) and the dog came off the property, across the street, growling and running after me, baring its teeth and tried to bite me. I avoided it on the way out but I had to go back the same way. On the way back, it came back after me again and blocked my path. I called for the owners and stopped running, yelled at the dog screaming "BACK"! It’s teeth were bared and it kept lunging at me. I had nothing to throw at it or squirt at it, I was really unsure what to do but after yelling at it for a bit, I got it to step back enough I sort of scooted by it and started walking past slowly until it seemed to think the threat was gone and it started to retreat. But by then my adrenalin level was so I high and I was so scared I couldn’t complete my run and I ended up just walking home shaking. I called animal control to report the dog but haven’t heard back and I want to run again today but just thinking about the dog I am afraid. I have a pitbull lab mix and I have never been afraid of a dog before. My dog is trained very well and is great with people! I want to know if anyone has any suggestions for scaring off an aggressive dog that are things you can carry while running. I do have a little belt I sometimes wear that you can put very small items in so I could possibly put pepper spray or something like that. But I wondered if the regular pepper spray would severely injure a dog? And would I get in trouble legally for spraying a dog with this?
thanks for your input.

pepper spray dogs
Honestly, some days I dont even feel safe walking around my own neighborhood. Dogs charge at me all of the time.
I need something that will deter them completely. Im not talking about a whistle used for training your dog to stop barking; I need something that can be used as self defense against a dangerous and attacking dog. I dont care if it harms the dog or causes serious damage (its my safety over theirs).
Pepper spray has been suggested, but im worried about not being able to aim with enough accuracy given that a dog can charge at me pretty fast. Do ultrasonic devices like the dazer 2 work for repelling aggressive dogs?
If military grade dog repellent exists, then thats what I want! What do police and postal service workers use?
By the way, dont bother suggesting therapy or revising my ethics towards the treatment of attacking dogs (if a dog attacks me, it is NOT innocent). I will not even consider these suggestions.
sure, I will just call animal control as im being mauled by a dog. No. You see by the time I discover a dog that is going to attack me, animal control or law enforcement cant respond fast enough. I need to defend myself.
Again, I dont care if the dog is aggressive by nature or by the way he was trained nor do I care about how he got off his leash in the first place. Once I am being attacked, its basic survival instincts, its kill or be killed (I dont necessarily need to kill the attacking dog, its just an expression)

Oh also, I dont like the idea of hitting the dog and relying on the force of the blow. In my experience swinging or even just carrying such a weapon can be perceived by the dog as being more threatening, making it more likely to attack.

dog mace
My son and I have been chased by this dog before. (Its a rottweiler) I have called the police and animal control but they will not do anything. I want to go on walks with my son but am afraid of the dog. What can I take with me to protect us? I was thinking mace but was not sure if that would stop the attack quick enough. I dont want to shoot it because I dont want to get in trouble. Any suggestions??

dog pepper spray
My dog was attacked by a Rottweiler this past weekend. He was injured but is going to survive. I’m concerned about this happening again. I had no idea what to do and want to be prepared if this were ever to happen again. What is the best way to protect yourself and your dog from an attack like this? Does anyone know of any products (pepper spray, etc.) that are useful?
Thank you for all the advice. My dog was on a leash when it happened and the Rottie’s fence was open so he came out and attacked my dog. We called animal control and reported the dog. The dog has never been reported before so is getting a "warning" supposedly.

repel dog
since I moved into my house in December I have have had dog(s) pooping in my yard. I have a sidewalk in front of my house, and there is a yellow fire hydrant next to the sidewalk in my yard. Dogs seem to want to poop in close proximity to the fire hydrant. I have a yard sign that has a picture of a dog pooping with the red circle and line going thru it. I also have a sign up displaying thru my front window saying "Dog Owners please be courtious of your neighbors and clean up after your dog(s)" I also have been laying down Repel Dog & Cat Repellent. But this stuff is expensive and every time it rains I have to reapply and it rains a lot this time of year in Florida. Also I think the dogs are becoming use to this stuff and it does not have as much effectiveness. Are there any other strategies I can try? I have heard about putting cayenne pepper so that the dogs sniff it and will learn not go in the yard. I have also thought of maybe some kind of contraption where nails can be sticking up. Maybe some kind of chain link fence that will blend into the grass with nails poking up or put some nails thru roofing paper.
My neighbors just let their dogs run around the neighborhood unleashed which is against city ordinance. They obviously have no respect for other people’s property. I have called animal control but by the time they get here the dogs are inside their houses.
Please help. I’m tired of picking up dog poop. And my HOA bothers me about maintaining my landscaping which is tough when dogs use my yard as toilet.
wow some good answers so far. except for shotgun. Felicia, I have a digital camcorder I just my try your suggestion. Single worker, the chicken wire does not sound like a bad idea. I’ll set up the camera today and see what happens. Maybe try the chicken wire in a few days. I seriously doubt I can put a fence up in the front yard HOA and City rules and fire dept with the hyrdant.

dog pepper spray
i was walking to my aunt’s house when a dog came barking and running to me (i think it’s a pitbull). i know it didn’t just want to play so i couldn’t just stand still and wait for it to bite me. good thing i brought a bag, i used it to block the dog and keep it as far from me as possible. it kept on barking and running around me. then the animal control came and the dog ran away. but what if the animal control didn’t come that fast? what should i do?
and i want to know what else could i do if ever this happens again and i don’t have anything with me to block and keep the dog away from me.
what stuffs (like pepper spray) can i use to distract the dog but won’t harm them?
sorry for so many questions. i got really scared.

dog pepper spray
Over the last 2 yrs of owning my dog, she’s gotten attacked by various dogs around 20-30 times, mostly in my neighborhood. Some of these dogs are supposedly "contained" by hidden fences yet 2 of these dogs have run out in the middle of the street (and i cross the street to get away from these dogs) – and they attack her. I own a lab mix who is terrified of other dogs bc of what she went through w/ her previous owners b4 we adopted her.
My sister is telling me i should carry a bat around and hit any dog that tries to attack my dog – i don’t want to hit ANY dog w/ a bat and i don’t want to kick them either – would using pepper spray work and be safe to use at attacking dogs?? Or, if this continues, should i just call the cops each time a dog attacks my dog?? or would i be outta line by calling the cops?? Is there Anything else i can do to avoid getting attacked? I have to take my dog for walks – its the only way to get her energy out and plus she absolutely loves going for walks.
I’m getting soooo annoyed and upset by all these dogs that have been attacking her lately. Last nite, a young boy was walking his dog w/ his dad, the dog was pulling him towards my dog, so the boy let go and here comes this big black dog running full speed at my dog and he attacked her biting her back. I have had it w/ these stupid people not bein able to control their dogs. If you can’t control your dog, DON’T walk them.
My stupid town doesn’t have a real leash law. Dogs are supposed to be on leash but they don’t do anything about it if they’re not on leash. I’ve complained to animal control b4 and they said they can’t do anything unless the dog attacks a person – basically they could care less if these dogs viciously attack other dogs.
In the last 4 days, my dog has been attacked by 3 separate dogs – though 2 of the attacks happened last nite and both dogs were being walked by their owners. This has gotten me super upset and i feel so bad for my dog. She does stand up for herself and fight back against those dogs but still, Its NOT right and NOT fair – i don’t understand those people.

tnx so much for those who took their time reading & answering my question. actually i have two dogs (great pyrenees). both of them knocked down the wooden fence in the backyard & got out just around the neighborhood. i believed somebody called the animal control, so the officer came by & picked up both dogs. she claimed that the other dog bit or attacked her so she used the pepper spray at first but it didnt work out so she used the shovel instead to calm the dog down. both dogs are up to date with their vaccines and no history of being a dangerous or vicious dog. both dogs live with my boyfriend & he was still at work when the incident happened. since the neighborhood knows those two dogs, they told the officer where those dogs live. so the officer went to my boyfriend’s house & told his sister that she will take both dogs to the shelter. she also told her that one of the dogs bit her. my boyfriend’s sister didnt see any sign of injury on the officer though.

pepper spray dogs
I am not afraid of most dogs but i do get very weary when i see loose dogs. For some reason it seems like the people in my area have no regard for keeping their animals under control. Pit bullss and other large dogs are seen roaming freely in the streets at all hours. I called animal control and because the dogs have collars and are owned they will do nothing. I’m afraid ill get hurt minding my business because idiots choose not to keep their animals on their property.
What should i do if one of these ( or 2 as i see them wandering in groups) chooses to approach me?
Is mace/pepper spray bad to use on dogs? will it attack me?
whats the best way to avoid getting hurt by these loose wandering large dogs.
Thanks for your input

There’s a bunch of morons in my neighborhood who let their dogs roam around. Animal Control has picked up several of them, but it keeps happening. To be honest, I’m scared to walk my dog around my neighborhood by myself. The dogs chase cars, other dogs, people on bicycles, etc… so I’m always worried that one of them will try to fight with my dog.
I guess what I’m asking is… what should I do if I’m ever approached by an aggressive dog? My dad told me to get pepper spray, but if the dogs are fighting, that won’t really help… what if I accidentally spray my own dog or something? :S
Does anyone have any suggestions? >_< I feel completely unprotected when I’m walking, and I have no idea how to break up a dog fight if it ever happens…
