dog deterrent
There has been a slew of B&Es recently on my street- even though we all have security alarms systems. Anyway, both of my neighbours have Beware of Dog signs on their houses, I don’t. I’m leary of putting one up because I think thay are kind of tacky looking and my ADT sign should be a deterrent enough, but it wasn’t for the neighbours who have been broken into.
What are your thoughts on Beware of Dog signs? My cat is more frightening then my puppy is.

Does anybody have a recipe for any kind of natural spray or liquid I can make from common foods/spices, etc. that would help keep my dog away from certain areas in the backyard? I know they have chemical ‘boundary’ sprays at the pet store, but I was thinking if anybody knows of certain scents, etc. that dogs don’t like.
Maybe like pepper in vinegar or something like that? Just so the dog will take a sniff and stay away.
Thanks.

Sometime in the near future, I plan to adopt a dog. There are three rescue organization I am looking at. One rescues German Shepherds, one collies (rough & smooth) and one border collies. (And yes, I am familiar with the unique needs of all three of these breeds, so don’t worry about me having more dog than I can handle)
One thing I would like to do with my dog is go running. One of my favorite places to run is a trail not too far from my home. However, this trail, depending on the time of day, can be very empty, and it goes through the woods and away from frequently traveled areas. Because of this, I don’t run here alone. I was wondering, though, if just the presence of a dog would be a form of protection. If I were a mugger/rapist/kidnapper/murderer, I definitely wouldn’t be going after someone with a German shepherd, just because unfortunately GSDs have a bad reputation of being aggressive. I’m not sure if a collie or border collie would have the same affect, though.
So what do you think? Would any of these dog breeds be a deterrent for a would be attacker, or just the shepherd?
P.S.- I’m not expecting this dog to actually go after someone who was attacking me. I’m thinking more along the lines of a preventive measure/deterrent.
As I mentioned in the post script, I don’t expect this dog to fight for me. I do things to protect myself, including carrying pepper spray and not running with headphones. I was just wondering if the presence of a dog would make a difference.
I appreciate the concern, but again, I’m not expecting this dog to actually attack someone and save me. I know that just because I dog is a shepherd does not mean it knows how to defend someone, and I’m well aware of the intense amount of training required for a dog to actually be used for personal protection. I do not plan for it to be my only defense against an attacker. Also, the rescues I’m looking at have very detailed evaluations on all of their dogs, and I do not think I will adopt one with severe fear/sensitivity etc. Some of the dogs are perfectly confident and normal. I just wanted to know it the dog would make any difference at all or if an attacker would see the dog and think, "Oh, well, there’s no way that dog will do anything."
Oh, and thank you to those of you how have read the additional details to understand what I am trying to ask.
Very few people are reading this question all the way through. I do NOT except this dog to actually attack someone. I am seen the intense training guard dogs go through and do not plan to do this with my dog. I have other methods of protection available, the dog would not be my sole means of defense.
Thanks to those who have actually read and answered the question.

What kind of dog would you recommend as a companion for an elderly lady who will only be able to take it for one short walk each day. She requires a gentle dog that can be trusted when grandchildren visit but one that would make enough noise to be a deterrent should anyone wish to enter uninvited. Also it would need to be light coloured as the lady is partially sighted and cannot see dark objects, A dark dog could cause an accident unfortunately. This is a tall order but can it be done? Neither I nor she know anything about different breeds of dog and their needs etc.

She keep s going back to the same corner area of the family room. I have it covered with black plastic but she still goes there. I guess she can smell through plastic. Some one said that pet storess sell a deterrant to keep them from going there again. Do they do some place else then? Thanks a lot!

I want a dog! I am very experienced with dogs and various breeds so I don’t need information on that.
I am followed often and strange men make me feel uncomfortable. If you were a rapist or attacker, who would you choose? Why? Any advice?
The girl walking alone
The girl walking with an 65-90 pound dog
The breed is not important to me because my apartment complex is very strict on breed.
Here’s another interesting question:
If you choose the girl with a dog, would it be more of a deterrent if the dog was black? (a friend of mine said lighter colored dogs looked less aggressive and more approachable)
I am very experienced with dogs, I’m a trainer and my mother is and Animal Control Officer. However, this doesn’t mean that I know that people will stop following me if I get a big dog versus a little one. I have no idea how effective that will be because I have only recently been out on my own and dog-less. Before my mother or my friends would always accompany me on walks with my dogs so I didn’t know.

He wont stop picking at it and I bought this Antiseptic spray with chew deterrent for dogs today but he still itches at it. I just gave him a bath when I found ants by the area and I put triple antibiotic ointment on it…but I’m pretty sure he licked it all off. I’m taking him to the vet on Tuesday which is as soon as I can because they’re all closed for Labor day. I noticed he’s been itching at that spot for about a week but I thought it was just because his hair is long. That spot looks really gross and doesn’t really have hair on it anymore. what can I do in the mean time to help him until I can get him into the vet.

I’ve collected about 150,000 glow in the dark watches, if I scrape off the luminous stuff will I have the needed radioactive material for a standard fission bomb or will I be stuck making one of those limp wristed and silly "dirty" devices?
I’m tired of my neighbors dog coming over here.
